OUr herd
Here at Sneaton Castle we have a pedigree rare breed herd of English White Shorthorn cattle, they are named the second rarest breed in the world.
We have a high health status and a closed herd, we do not visit any markets, and the animals only leave to be used in our own restaurant and to provide stock for other breeders. The breed is renowned for ease of calving and maternal excellence.
The pure-bred bulls are a perfect cross on all breeds including continentals, improving these traits and especially highland cattle where they improve their confirmation.
They are extremely hard on dry land and they do not need to be housed in winter.
The cattle have exceptionally good feet, the white shorthorn is a perfect low maintenance breed and are very mild mannered, we find them ideal when we have many other things going on at the castle and we get so much pleasure managing them and preserving the natural pure trails for future generations.
Sadly, in July of this year Adrian Wheelwright, owner with Janice his wife of the Longley herd of White Shorthorn in Fife Scotland, passed away. Adrian sold his stock bull – Longley Duke a number of years ago to us and he had bred so well, from this initial interaction we have become firm friends, his enthusiasm for the breed was second to none, he was a very intelligent and forward-thinking man and has exported to many countries.
Unfortunately, Janice is not able to look after the herd and it feels right and fitting to bring the Langley herd to Yorkshire to join the Sneaton Castle White Shorthorn, both herds share the high health status.
We think Adrian would appreciate the amalgamation and will be looking down giving us a few pointers, we have every intention of keeping up the good work in providing stock bulls and heifers for fellow breeders wherever they farm.
